  STEPHEN F KINGSMORE

Stephen F Kingsmore, President

Dr. Kingsmore is a physician-scientist with significant experience in senior leadership roles in the biotechnology industry. Dr. Kingsmore's previous roles included Chief Operating Officer of Molecular Staging Inc. and Vice President of Research of CuraGen Corporation, both of New Haven, CT. Prior to that, he was Assistant Professor at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he positionally cloned 5 disease genes and published over 70 peer-reviewed research papers. Dr. Kingsmore received a B.Sc. in medical microbiology with first class honors and graduated in medicine (M.B., Ch.B., B.A.O.) from the Queen's University of Belfast, Northern Ireland. He completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine, and a fellowship in Rheumatology, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC.

 DAMIAN D GESSLER

Damian D Gessler, Program Lead

Dr. Gessler received a double-major in Biology and Mathematics at Beloit College, Wisconsin, and a Ph.D. in Population Genetics at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Dr. Gessler's biological expertise is in evolution and population genetics as studied via computational techniques. He has used this to delineate conditions favorable for the evolution of recombination and meiosis, and to quantify the rate of Muller's ratchet in populations unable to achieve mutation-selection balance. Dr. Gessler continues research in the evolution of recombination.

Dr. Gessler's informatic expertise is in simulation, modeling, and data integration. He has over 20 yrs experience in computer programming and systems operations. Recent work focuses on the challenges of integrating data and services from across the web in a semantic web architecture. This complements on-going work to build a new class of "data driven" simulation designs aimed at constructing better predictive models.

 ERNEST F RETZEL

Ernest F Retzel, Program Lead

Ernie Retzel has worked in informatics since 1989. During this time, he worked on several plant EST and genome projects, including /Arabidopsis/, soybean, pine and /Medicago truncatula/. Bioinformatics efforts have included developing databases for legume projects, as well as forest crops [poplar and a variety of conifers]. Prior to joining NCGR, Retzel was the founder and director of the Center for Computational Genomics and Bioinformatics at the University of Minnesota, and led bioinformatics development efforts under a variety of NSF, USDA and private grants and contracts. Development work included software for visualization, data mining, protein families and distributed computing.

Dr. Retzel obtained his Bachelor's degrees in microbiology and chemistry from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, and his Ph.D. in microbiology and biochemistry from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
